Review

Down Beat (10/01, p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Shows Forbert settling into a groove that suits him....[He] can evoke a time and a place with just a phrase or word...EVERGREEN is about redemption through acceptance..."
No Depression (3-4/00, pp.114-115) - "...producer Jim Dickinson adds his own mix of laid-back Memphis soul and experimentation to the singer's streetwise folk music....Muted horns and a small chorus of background vocalists give many of the songs an intimate, almost R&B-tinged atmosphere..."
Mojo (Publisher) (9/00, p.102) - "...The sometimes country, sometimes R&B, sometimes R&B/country composite songs are perfect vehicles for his fragile but tenacious voice..."

Title Note

Personnel: Steve Forbert (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Clay Barnes (electric guitar, keyboards); Jack Holder (guitar); Jim Spake (tenor & baritone saxophones); Scott Thompson, Tom Clary (trumpet); Jim Dickinson (keyboards); Spooner Oldham, Reese Wynans (organ); Tim Drummond, Dave Smith (bass); Greg Morrow, Oscar Butterworth (drums).

Recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee.

Prior to releasing EVERGREEN BOY, Steve Forbert endured a well-publicized lockout from his former record label and had to endure the distracting onus of the dreaded "New Dylan" tag, two facts that help make this excellent album even more of a miraculous accomplishment. These instantly likable songs display that same affable and slightly melancholy charm that won Forbert a large and devoted following in the '70s. Simply and beautifully produced by famed rockabilly producer/nut Jim Dickenson, this album is full of tender and heartfelt songs. Wonderful stuff.
