Mae's THE EVERGLOW begins with a spoken-word introduction that instructs the listener to read the accompanying booklet while listening to the album. The booklet includes the song lyrics and a series of whimsical illustrations (they have the feel of drawings from a children's book) depicting the journey of a young boy enduring trials and tribulations on his way to "the everglow," a state of love and awareness. The music, naturally, follows this same trajectory, from the delicate piano balladry of "We're So Far Away," the album's opener, through songs about self-doubt ("Suspension"), loneliness ("The Ocean"), and, finally, joy ("Ready and Waiting to Fall").

The band's highly polished sound will appeal to fans of radio-ready melodic rock. Lead singer Dave Elkins's vulnerable, expressive tenor and soul-searching lyrics locate Mae firmly in emo territory, and while their crunching electric guitars and taut, powerhouse rhythms pack a solid punch, they never overpower the hook-heavy melodies of the songwriting. Like the cartoon boy wanderer featured in the booklet, the listener can traipse along the hero's path on THE EVERGLOW, following--song by song--the directions on Mae's confessional, pop-rock map.
