Although the Only Ones were one of the finest bands of the U.K. post-punk explosion--playing a style considerably more indebted to Beatles jangle and Stones swagger than punk nihilism--the drug-addled ensemble are, at best, a belated one-hit-wonder. But oh what a hit it is! The Only Ones' "Another Girl Another Planet," from their 1978 debut is a power-pop classic and has been covered by a host of bands, from Greg Kihn to Belle & Sebastian. Like many groups forever linked to one song, the Only Ones' excellent, though sparse, output has been overshadowed by "Another Girl, Another Planet." Still, the band has maintained a rabid cult following for decades.

Although known to the world at large for their transcendent (and seemingly timeless) hit "Another Girl Another Planet," the Only Ones were also capable of hard-hitting album tracks like the ones found in abundance on their second release, 1979's EVEN SERPENTS SHINE. Blending then-fashionable new wave signifiers with an old-fashioned, Doors-ian sense of drama and gloom, and enough rough edges to keep the punks interested, Peter Perrett and company crafted an excellent follow-up to their debut. This 2008 re-release has been digitally remastered and sounds great.
