"I Shall Be Released" appears here in its complete form for the first time.

This compilation brings together 12 tracks from Nina Simone's RCA period (1966-1974), where she put out nine albums after having recorded for the Bethlehem, Colpix, and Philips labels. The tracks collected here display the eclectic artistry of the mahogany-voiced Simone, and they're typical of her RCA period in that much of the production is heavily rooted in the R&B/pop sound of the time.

The songs here dip into the work of contemporary singer/songwriters such as Bob Dylan ("I Shall Be Released") and Leonard Cohen ("Suzanne"), and also deal with social injustices, as on "Why? (The King of Love Is Dead)," about the death of Martin Luther King Jr. The standout tracks are those with the simplest production values, including her now-classic original "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and a searingly emotional version of the Gershwin song "My Man's Gone Now" from "Porgy And Bess."
