Title Note

The Eskimo label is brought to you by the folks who operate the Belgium-based Culture Club. This fourth volume in their compilation series follows in the footsteps of the previous three; it's a mix that blends a couple familiar tracks with a whole heap of ones that hardly anyone -- save for the DJ who digs real deep -- will recognize. Over the course of 70 minutes, the Glimmer Twins -- Mo and Benoelie, not Mick and Keith -- roll through 16 selections that range from deep house to dusty disco to forgotten funk. Save for the rough transition that is forced from Zero dB's "Come Party" into Martin Circus' "Disco Circus," the ride is quite smooth. No doubt a welcome inclusion on any disc, regardless of the set-up, "Disco Circus" is a Prelude disco classic -- and it's French, predating Daft Punk by more than a decade! -- that is as likely to incite dizzy bliss as it is likely to provoke violent fits of laughter. It's this carefree attitude that helps make the disc a great deal of fun. In an era when mix discs often come off more like smug fashion accessories, it's good to have no-nonsense, fun-loving mixes like this one to counter them. The others in on the action include Lime's "Baby We're Gonna Love Tonight" (wild Italo-disco), the Flirts' "Passion" (see Felix da Housecat's "Silver Screen Shower Scene"), Gary's Gang's "Let's Lovedance Tonight" (the epitome of rare groove, and another Daft Punk precursor), and Angie Stone's "Brotha" (given a loving deep-house retooling by DJ Spen). ~ Andy Kellman
