When Syntonic Research introduced its ENVIRONMENTS series in the late '60s, nature records had already been around for years. Among the most delightful was Smithsonian/Folkways' SOUNDS OF NORTH AMERICAN FROGS (1958), narrated by distinguished herpetologist Charles M. Bogert. As the sub-title of ENVIRONMENTS 1 made clear, however, the emphasis of the series was not naturalism but "inner space."
SEASHORE was post-psychedelia. In liner notes that were both scientific and highly practical, ENVIRONMENTS' creator I.S. Teibel covered every possible use-therapeutic, sexual, social-for what was, essentially, an hour of exceptionally well-recorded ocean surf.
Later ENVIROMENTS releases included TINTABULATION and DAWN AT NEW HOPE, but nothing beat the original SEASHORE for true easy listening.
