Published between 1882 and 1898, Professor Child's study of popular ballads in the English language was the first comprehensive survey of all extant ballads and their known variants. Volume IV, which comprises Parts VII and VIII of the original set, contains ballads 189-265, including "Rob Roy," "Sir James the Rose," "Geordie," "The Gypsy Laddie," "The New-Slain Knight," and "The False Lover Won Back." Unabridged republication of the works originally published between 1882 and 1898.
