It seems evident from Kurt Rosenwinkel's THE ENEMIES OF ENERGY that he is not your typical jazz guitarist. Instead, he is driven by a muse that allows him to develop a sound and texture all his own. His atmospheric, reverberating tones cascade through the music, never forcing their way, but always propelling Rosenwinkel's constant slew of ideas into the audible realm. He is deftly accompanied by the young tenor star Mark Turner, creative drummer Jeff Ballard, pianist Scott Kinsey, and bassist Ben Street in a set of all original compositions that both challenge and delight.

The tunes themselves, like Rosenwinkel's original style, are difficult to categorize. Hints of wistful dreamscapes are present at one turn ("The Enemies of Energy"), only to be superseded by a quirky funk groove at the next ("Grant"). Rosenwinkel is constantly coming up with new sounds throughout the compositions, employing various affected electric and acoustic guitars, as well as his own vocals ("Number Ten," "The Polish Song"). Indeed, everything about the music on this disc speaks of eschewing the norm for a more esoteric approach while remaining highly tuneful. In all, Rosenwinkel makes a distinctive mark with his efforts.
