Issued in 2008, END TITLES. STORIES FOR FILM marks another new phase for James Lavelle's ongoing U.K. electronica project, UNKLE, with longtime collaborator Richard File replaced by programmer Pablo Clements. Despite File's absence, END TITLES is largely a companion piece to the previous album, WAR STORIES, with a number of familiar guests popping up once again, including Gavin Clark of the British folk-rock act Clayhill and Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and Chris Goss. The record's standout track, however, is "Clouds," an ominous song enhanced by the Canadian indie-rock act Black Mountain. Although nothing will likely top UNKLE's classic DJ Shadow era, this moody, cinematic outing proves that Lavelle can create intriguing music regardless of his primary foil.
