First line

The twentieth century, it is safe to say, has made all of us into deep historical pessimists.

Publisher's note

Enhanced by a new afterword dealing with the post-September 11th world, a provocative exploration of issues of human society and destiny answers such questions as, is there a direction to human history? does history have an end? and where are we now? Reprint.

Annotation

Both influential and controversial, Francis Fukuyama's 1992 analysis of the political and economic prospects following the fall of Communism is an essential text for debates on globalization and the post-9/11 world order. Fukuyama champions liberal democracy as the end result of the long march of history, and, borrowing from Hegel, says it addresses man's essential longing "to be recognized."

Along the way, Fukuyama examines the ideas of the great political philosophers of the West, and he weighs the value of a "Universal History of mankind" which sees history as "stages." Prior forms of government--aristocracy, monarchy, totalitarianism, militaristic--were based on the model of the relationship of lord and slave. Liberal democracy is, in Fukuyama's view, the only game in town; and he asks if this is enough to address real issues such as poverty, hunger, homelessness. Society will prosper if the "Last Man" can experience a "rational recognition" of others. Heavy ideas aside, Fukuyama brings it down to the most basic level of the individual and society. His insightful and accessible combination of economics, politics, and culture, make THE END OF HISTORY AND THE LAST MAN a solid critique and a tantalizingly useful perspective on future history.
