Nina Simone is abundantly represented on both compilations and live albums, but when an artist's talent is as wide-ranging and enduring as Simone's, who's complaining? EMPRESS LIVE! collects in-concert performances of some of the artist's best known tracks, including "I Loves You Porgy," "Four Women," "Sugar In My Bowl," and "Mississippi Goddam."

Simone is in fine voice here, and her skill at switching from show tunes to standards to pop in the blink of an eye is readily apparent. Moreover, Simone lends her distinctively soulful stamp to each interpretation, making every tune her own. While longtime fans will likely have live versions of almost all of these songs elsewhere in their Simone collections, EMPRESS LIVE! is a fine place for the uninitiated to hear Simone's in-concert magic.
