Title Note

Producer: Richard Brock.

Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.

Recorded in New York, New York on December 9, 1957. Includes liner notes by James Gavin.

Digitally remastered by Malcolm Addey.

Recorded December 9th, 1957, this 1995 release features previously unreleased material from the Chet Baker archives; these songs represent his last date for the Pacific Jazz label as a bandleader. On an album comprised entirely of ballads, Baker is at home with such lush standards as "Embraceable You," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and "They All Laughed." On these songs, Baker croons with his now famous boyish voice. Save for his Oklahoma dialect--"thur" for "there," "yer" for "your"--his inflection is cool yet romantic, smooth yet raw. It's easy to see how Baker's singing style has influenced a generation of jazz singers. Indeed, the way he slurs lyrics for melodic continuity, and the way he employs breathy, pianissimo long tones, makes him one of the most unique singers in jazz.

Backed by David Wheat on nylon stringed guitar and Ross Savakus on double bass, EMBRACEABLE YOU is a rare collection of jazz classics, perfect for lovers. Baker plays trumpet on six of the 13 tracks, and we hear the same organic yet incisive melodic sense in his trumpet playing as we do in his singing.
