Album Description

Opening their doors in 1960, Ember Records were one of the first independent labels in the U.K. to become a frequent presence on the charts, presenting a mix of local talent and material licensed from American labels that kept the company in business for close to 20 years. Tell Me: Ember Beat Vol. 1 (1962-1964) is a collection devoted to some of the label's more memorable pop and rock efforts of the early '60s. While this was the period in which the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were rewriting the rules of British rock, Ember's approach was more conservative, and to American ears, the most familiar material will be six tracks from Chad & Jeremy (including an unreleased stereo version of "Yesterday's Gone"), whose easygoing blend of pop and folk was actually more popular in the United States than it was at home. For fans of curious novelty material, the big draw will be six tunes by the John Barry Seven; "Zulu Stamp"'s appropriation of African themes with a heavy layer of studio gloss sets the standard for Barry's material here, which is entertaining and well-crafted if overly gimmicky. (Barry was also Ember's A&R chief for a while, and his touch can be spotted in some of the arrangements for other acts.) Most of the other groups featured here, such as Count Downe & the Zeros, Carter Lewis & the Southerners, and A Band of Angels fall into the less remarkable ranks of British beat acts who offered an energetic and well-scrubbed approximation of early American rock & roll without the authentic grit and passion that would make the major British Invasion acts a world-wide draw. But for fans of such things, the singles collected here are well-produced and upbeat, and the mastering for this compilation sounds excellent, while Lorne Murdoch's liner notes are breezy and informative; connoisseurs of the early years of British rock will be well served by this disc. ~ Mark Deming
