Review

"Levine leaves the familiar motifs intact--wicked stepmother, glass slipper, midnight curfew at the ball--but by establishing an easy, playful friendship between Ella and the prince which blossoms gradually into love, she offers readers with feminist sensibilities the assurance that life with Charmont (the prince you want to bring home to mother) will in fact be happy, ever after."

"This refreshing take on one of the world's most popular fairy tales preserves the spirit of the original but adds plenty of humorous twists and a spunky, intelligent female lead."

First line

That fool of a fairy Lucinda did not intend to lay a curse on me.

Publisher's note

At birth, Ella of Frell was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at any time anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom--and she'll have to obey? Ella's quest to break the curse and discover who she really is, is both funny and poignant. 1998 Newbery Honor Book; ALA 1998 Best Book for Young Adults.

Annotation

At birth, a girl named Ella is given the gift of obedience by a fairy. The fairy thinks she is doing a good deed because all children should be obedient, but she doesn't realize that her gift is really a curse because now Ella has no choice but to follow every command given to her. As Ella grows up, the gift becomes more and more of a burden and places her, and those she loves, in dangerous situations. Because the fairy refuses to rescind her gift, Ella struggles to find a way to break the spell herself.
