One of the great developments of the 20th century is our ability to preserve music in performance as well as transcription. The performing artists will be remembered by more than name--their recordings will play on for centuries to come.

This recording represents a rare opportunity to hear one of the century's great violinists in his youth, conducted by a great composer at the end of his career. Two years before his death, Sir Edward Elgar met a 16-year-old Yehudi Menuhin, and the two became fast friends. Menuhin, who was already enthusiastic about Elgar's violin concertos and 'Enigma' Variations, was enlisted to record with the London Symphony and Royal Albert Hall orchestras.

The synergy between conductor and soloist is palpable in these remastered recordings. In addition to their superb technique and understanding of the works, the two understood each other deeply. "You see, Yehudi," Elgar wrote over the violin's entry on the score, "I thought of you 10 years before you were born."

Performances such as these make for legend in music history texts. Thanks to technology, they can be preserved and enjoyed today and forever.
