Review

"A revelatory book about a transformative place."

"A set of brilliantly evocative and propulsive novellas....Theroux...charge[s] his compulsive stories with the resonance and craft of darkly moral fables ...His characters begin in manicured, air-conditioned places, but it is the clammy grasp of desire, the smells and the slippery deals of the back alleyways, that really bring them out. The human bestiary has rarely found a more spirited observer."

Publisher's note

A trio of interlinked novellas chronicles the lives of Westerners who have been forever changed by their experiences with the people and places of India, from a middle-aged couple on vacation, to a staid Boston attorney, to a young woman who befriends an elephant in Bangalore.

Annotation

The insidious influence of American culture in India plays the central theme of the three novellas in Paul Theroux's THE ELEPHANTA SUITE. In one novella, a rich American couple used to being treated like royalty in India's opulent spas begins to take sexual advantage of the staff. In another, a wealthy businessman trolls the slums of Mumbai in search of easy sexual conquest, unaware that his subservient Indian servant is plotting betrayal. Finally, an Indian man who works as an English telephone operator slowly finds his morals eroded by his exposure to Western psychology. It's a notably bleak view of the effects of globalization, and readers will be struck by the malevolent power of culture in conflict.
