Review

Rolling Stone (7/12/69, p.37) - "...the Youngbloods have become broadly eclectic and, eschewing dilettantism, have transmuted each of the musical streams borrowed [blues/ragtime] into strongly individualistic statements..."
Uncut (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The album] found the sweet-voiced Young reborn as a West Coast troubadour on potent compositions..."

Title Note

The Youngbloods: Jesse Colin Young (vocals, guitar, bass); Banana (guitar, keyboards); Joe Bauer (drums).

Engineers: Richie Schmidt, Hank Cicalo, Mickey Crofford.

Recording information: Hollywood, California.

This was the closest that the Youngbloods came to making a fully realized album. It remains their finest work, even though fans and critics felt, and still feel, that they were capable of something much better. The disposable snippets and vignettes help to fill up an album of a 'few great songs'. 'Darkness Darkness' is one of the great ones, with a guitar break that seems to go above the last fret on the neck. 'Quicksand', 'Ride the Wind' and 'Beautiful' are further examples of clever but unpretentious pop masquerading as rock. Jesse Colin Young was a fine songwriter and the undisputed brains behind Bauer and Banana.
