Review

"Christopher Nicholson skillfully manages Tom's narrative so that it changes in tone from wide-eyed country-boy amazement at all the goings-on to a more worldly-wise, more confident account."

"Christopher Nicholson's enchanting first novel is full of the mingled affection and tragedy that have long marked our relationship with the world's largest terrestrial animals. THE ELEPHANT KEEPER is a strange tour of late 18th-century England, a natural history of elephants and the story of a most unusual friendship, all told with a touch of the otherworldly elegance and wit of Babar."

"The wary reader may fear that the...narrative will turn out to be either arch or precious, too clever or too sweet for its own good....[T]his exceptional novel....is neither; it is simply good and deceptively simple."

Annotation

Christopher Nicholson's debut novel captures the remarkable friendship between a man and an elephant during the 18th century. In 1766, a stable boy named Tom is given the (literally) large responsibility of caring for a pair of elephants on an English estate. Spending all his time with the elephants, Tom soon develops such a rapport with the creatures that he can carry on full conversations with them and train them without violence. The male elephant is eventually sold, leaving Tom alone with Jenny, the female, and he chooses to abandon his human companions and stay with her when she is shipped to a new owner. Tom and Jenny endure much hardship, as their living conditions get gradually worse, but their shared memory of their unique bond transcends the physical elements of their existence.
