Annotation

From the creation of the experimental Moog synthesizer in the mid-1960s to the cutting-edge sounds being created by 21st-century artists, the rise of electronic music has been gradual but relentless. ELECTRO SHOCK! is an entertaining overview of the music of a broad cross-section of contemporary electronic performers, including British electro-pop pioneer Vince Clarke, who formed his group Erasure after leaving Depeche Mode (also featured), and Kraftwerk, the pioneering German synthesizer band who almost single-handedly started the electronic pop movement. In short, easily digestible chapters, Greg Rule, a writer for Keyboard magazine, explores beneath the synthetic surface of the genre. He discovers these musicians' influences, describes exactly how they make the sounds, and, in informative product spotlights (a couple written by the mastermind of the Moog synthesizer, Bob Moog), explains what kind of equipment they use. Rule's interviews with musicians like the reclusive Richard James, better known as Aphex Twin, reveal sound-obsessed artists using algorithms, computer programs, and filter boxes as easily and effectively as traditional musicians use strings or piano keys.
