Tego Calder¢n stands as one of the foremost ambassadors of the Reggaet¢n genre. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Calder¢n was instilled with a love of salsa since birth and grew to embrace various musical genres including Jamaican dancehall, mambo, plena, and hip-hop. After various guest appearances, Tego signed to White Lion records and released his debut, EL ABAYARDE, in 2002. A virtual overnight sensation, EL ABAYARDE garnered acclaim for its elevated lyricism and was crucial in introducing Reggaet¢n to mainstream listeners. After the 2004 collection, EL ENEMY DE LOS GUASIBI (which included many of Tego's early guest spots), Calder¢n spread his wings further on EL SUBESTIMADO (2006), incorporating a wider variety of Afro-Caribbean

For EL SUBESTIMADO (THE UNDERDOG), Tego Calderon moved to a major label and also increased his sophisticated take on reggaeton, Latin rap, and hip-hop. Though embraced by the reggaeton and hip-hop communities, Calderon's sound differs from his contemporaries by mixing elements of salsa, dancehall, and other forms from his native Puerto Rico (like the plena) with hard, street-level beats. Calderon's raps are personal and affecting as well, further differentiating him from the scores of party-centric reggaeton MCs. EL SUBESTIMADO should establish Calderon as one of the stand-out talents of the genre.
