Title Note

The combination of David Gege's brutally honest songwriting and Steve Albini's equally brutal (loud) production on 1991's SEAMONSTERS made that album one of the Wedding Present's finest. The band strikes gold again with the same combination on 2008's EL REY. Less punishing than SEAMONSTERS, EL REY showcases Gege's soul-baring tunesmithery once again, and while sonically the album is not as edgy, the stark, no-nonsense sound makes the emotional content of these songs stand out even more.

Whether it's the near jangle-pop of "Spider Man in Hollywood," the moody drift of "The Trouble With Men," or the cheeky confessional "Don't Take Me Home Until I'm Drunk," Gege reveals his songwriting skill again and again. This alone makes EL REY worth hearing. But the band is also in superb form, creating subtle atmospherics one moment, and unleashing furious squall the next. EL REY is another notch in the already impressive belt of The Wedding Present.
