Issued in 2007, this compilation is designed as a companion piece to the soundtrack for the Hector Lavoe biopic EL CANTANTE, which features acolyte Marc Anthony portraying the troubled, but remarkably talented, Puerto Rican salsa singer. Presenting classic performances by the late crooner himself, the 14-track anthology includes well-known tunes such as the lively "Mi Gente" and the swooning, string-tinged "Periodico de Ayer," songs that highlight both Lavoe's clear-as-a-bell voice and the proficiency of his highly rhythmic backing band. Although there are more comprehensive collections available (see the two-disc LA VOZ set), THE ORIGINALS is a fine introduction to Lavoe's vibrant 1970s solo work.
