This timely reissue of the obscure Midwestern R&B label Capsoul's back catalogue highlights the raw talent of long-forgotten artists like Virgil Johnson, whose soaring vocals on the gorgeously atmospheric, vibes-laced "You Can't Blame Me" strongly suggest the Temptations' David Ruffin. The label released only a dozen singles and one album in its five-year lifespan, but ECCENTRIC SOUL's informative liner notes, and tracks like the infectiously raucous instrumental "Hot Grits," as well as Bill Moss's Stax- and Black Power-inspired soul stomper "Sock it to 'Em Soul Brother," prove it was bad luck and ill-starred business decisions rather than lack of musical quality that kept Capsoul from becoming Ohio's answer to Tamla Motown.
