During the cold war, collaborations between U.S. and Russian musicians were infrequent. Yet, in a rare act of solidarity, the Paul Winter Consort and the The Dimitri Pokrovsky Singers came together to create a compelling set of music. Each song on EARTHBEAT combines American jazz with Russian folk music. And along the way, other styles of music, such as Latin, seep into the mix too.

More than anything, this is celebratory music. With the exception of "The Lake," this album is far from introspective. In fact, it explodes with energy and vigor on almost every track. Album openers "Kurski Funk" and "The Horse Walked in the Grass" feature the Pokrovsky Singers wailing over Winter's octet. In addition to singing, they hoot, holler, and whistle. Other pieces such as "Kyrie" and "Down in Belgorod" blend smooth jazz and sleek saxophone riffs with intense Russian singing. Despite the uniqueness of the former, "Song For The World" remains the most poignant track on EARTHBEAT. An anthem for peace and amity, this composition will probably never lose its relevance.
