Earth Prayer (CD)

Canadian Bill Douglas personifies the eclecticism that characterizes 21st-century New Age music. A critically acclaimed recording artist, he has released several best-selling Celtic-flavored titles. He composes classical musical pieces for orchestras and choral groups around the world, and has taught music history and technique on the university level. He has played jazz piano, and classical bassoon, and worked as a musical theorist. Often setting elegant 18th- and 19th-century poetry to original tunes, Douglas makes excellent use of the spine-tingling choral blends of the Ars Nova Singers. The hymn-like songs traverse a surprising variety of styles, from Celtic to classical to folk to an almost aboriginal tribal feel.

When it comes to evoking heavenly states, a human choir trumps the most sophisticated synthesizer every time. Setting the elegant poetry of Tennyson, Yeats, Shakespeare, and others to original tunes, Bill Douglas makes excellent use of the spine-tingling choral blends of the Ars Nova Singers on about half of the tracks here. With or without vocals, the songs are hymn-like in their simplicity and reverence, and manifest in a surprising variety of styles. "Spirit Dance" has an almost tribal feel, while "Wind of Delight," a spirited Irish jig, resembles the Celtic-flavored music for which Douglas is best known. The stained-glass strains of "As Dreams are Made of" (lyrics courtesy of Shakespeare and Thomas Traherne) are part medieval church music, part romantic piano ballad. Throughout the recording, orchestral instruments like bassoon, cello, and French horn support the serious atmosphere without sounding heavy-handed. EARTH PRAYER is lovely, contemplative album that would not sound out of place at weddings, memorial services, or any occasion that calls for prayerful music.
