The Wire (p.54) - "Like Bristol's drum 'n' bass of the mid-90s, the percussion is what keeps it rolling -- incisive touches of hi-hats, tambourines and crisp snares push the rhythm forward..."

Title Note

The sixth installment in this fine dubstep compilation series is mixed by the brilliant Appleblim, whose musical taste is showcased here along with some truly exceptional beat-matching skills. Those are put on display most prominently on the first transition in this hour-long DJ mix: the program opens with Peverlist's "Gather," a snaky, skanky, almost abstract one-drop vibe that keeps the bass almost subliminally low and leaves plenty of echo space. When the track segues into "Circling" (by the same artist), the new track sneaks in around the beat, throwing everything deliriously off-kilter for awhile before asserting control with a faintly soca-flavored groove. Then comes Yolanda Pinch with "Get Up," a soulful song with squidgy synth and a dark, jittery feel. And so it goes for the rest of the album, with unsettled and eerie fare like "Suburbia" by Martyn rubbing up against the joyful layers of synthesized bell tones on TRG/Selector Dub U's "Harajuku," and the dubbed-up birdcalls of 2562's "Morvern" eventually giving way to the equally dubwise reggae vocals of tracks like "Pretty Bright Light" by RSD and the brilliant "Babylon" by Mungo's Hi-Fi. These compilations are clearly aimed at newcomers to the dubstep genre, but it's hard to imagine even the fussiest and most well-informed devotee turning up his or her nose at this particular volume in the series.
