Review

Spin (p.122) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On 'Full Moon or Infinity,' he's gently Elliott Smith-like."
Entertainment Weekly (p.126) - "[T]he singer-songwriter seems to source his lyrics from dreams, with hazy impressions of longing and wonder that linger."
Uncut (p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he range of McCombs' references is wide. 'Lionkiller' sounds like Terry Riley jamming with Franz Ferdinand. 'That's That' bounces like James' 'Sit Down'..."
Magnet (p.105) - "Spacious arrangements leave plenty of room for layers of vocal harmonies, and unlike many crooners, McCombs is at his most endearing when he stretches his tenor."
Q (Magazine) (p.110) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] a folky, sometimes mod-like poppiness that resonates with trails of Big Star and Elliott Smith....This is the work of a singular talent."
Clash (magazine) (p.107) - "Opening track 'Lionkiller' pounces on your ears and refuses to let go....The album continues to traverse everything from Laurel Canyon folk rock guitar of 'Petrified Forest' to his more reflective moments in 'Full Moon Of Infinity'..."

Title Note

Personnel: Cass McCombs (vocals, guitar, piano, bass guitar); Matt Popieluch (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric piano); Travis Graves (vocals); Luke Top (bass guitar); Orpheo McCord (drums, percussion); Garrett Ray (drums); Rob Barbato (Theremin); Natalie Conn.

The third album by Cass McCombs finds the singer-songwriter working on a broad sonic and stylistic canvas. Moving between and blending together singer-songwriter fare (think Iron & Wine or M. Ward) with country, rock, chamber pop, and a distinctively indie sensibility, McCombs casts a seductive spell with his swirling arrangements, poetic lyrics, and compelling hooks. There is also a gentle psychedelic lilt to the album, making DROPPING THE WRIT seem like a hazy dream had by a very smart, sensitive, talented human. This album lets us fully inhabit that dream, and to claim it, perhaps, for ourselves.
