Review

Option (7-8/96, p.109) - "...More conservative structurally than [CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS], DREAM OF THE ELDERS is also more mature, Holland's model compositions sounding more deeply personal and fully realized than his past recordings (and that's saying something)..."

Title Note

Personnel: Dave Holland (acoustic bass); Cassandra Wilson (vocals); Eric Person (soprano & alto saxophones); Steve Nelson (vibraphone, marimba); Gene Jackson (drums).

Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in March 1995.

This quartet wraps itself around eight David Holland originals and burns like a quiet but relentless flame. It's a beautifully balanced ensemble, supporting the leader's bass with vibes and marimba player Steve Nelson, saxophonist Eric Person, and drummer Gene Jackson. The dynamic range and contrasts afforded by these four players and their instruments is perfectly suited to the textural contrasts and elegant drama of the compositions. There are never any abrupt surprises in Holland's writing. Rather, it's as if a destination was called from the outset of each piece and the quartet is simply taking the scenic route to get there. The closing number, "Equality," is sung by Cassandra Wilson and utilizes a poem by Maya Angelou-perfect choices on both counts. As always, the album is wonderfully recorded, with the wood tones of the bass and the marimba being especially warm and detailed.
