Franks made a name for himself in the '70s by combining folk, jazz, pop and bossa nova. This 1993 album finds him updating his sound with state-of-the-art production, but the essential elements of his style are still present. Franks' smooth, silvery voice, somewhat reminiscent of a mellower (!) David Crosby, glides elegantly over the songs. A low-key L.A. pop aesthetic dominates the arrangements, with tasteful percussion and sweet sax riffs adding color to the production.

The focus, however, is on Franks' hypnotic vocals and the subtly undulating compositions. "Practice Makes You Perfect" has an upbeat, contemporary R&B feel, and "Monk's New Tune" displays Franks' jazzier side. The gentle samba feel of "You Were Meant For Me" (which features guest vocals from Peggy Lee) is where he really shines, though--his hypnotic singing draws attention without any overt expenditure of effort.
