Review

"This little book isn't for everyone, but I sure loved it. If, like me, you've thought from time to time that under our controlled demeanors, our learning and good manners, we're all about one millimeter away from being stark, staring mad, and that the doctors who set up to treat us are probably just as crazy as the rest of us, if not more so, you'll sigh and smile when you read this."

"In Kirsten Menger-Anderson's ingenious and appealing collection of linked stories...[she] brings a writerly order to the messiness of our minds."

Publisher's note

From Dr. Olaf van Schuler's flight to New Amsterdam in 1664 to the present day, a series of interlinked short stories chronicles generations of physicians in an eccentric family that adopts the latest medical and scientific trends of the day, from spontaneous combustion and phrenology to electric shock treatment, psychosurgery, and genetic research.

Annotation

DOCTOR OLAF VAN SCHULER'S BRAIN tracks the macabre twists and turns of medical history through a series of short-stories concerning the same mentally unhinged family. The collection begins with the titular Doctor Olaf Van Schuler fleeing 17th-century Holland as a result of his habit of falling asleep while blood-letting patients, and then promptly waking up to dissect the fresh corpse's brains. His grand ambition is to cure his raving mother, who he brings with him to the New World boarded up inside a crate. In the stories that follow, Olaf's similarly deranged descendants will encounter the full gamut of science's most bizarre quackery and awful realities: shock therapy, spontaneous combustion, hysteria, hypnotism, and breast implants. Kristen Menger-Anderson's marvelous debut collection succeeds at turning the ghoulish facts of history into masterful and mordant fictions.
