Uncut (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he non-western scales give an irresistible swing and the sheer size of the electric fuzz makes for wickedly heavy hip hop."
The Wire (p.59) - "[The] combination of tight thematic remit and positive outside influence has resulted in a record as thrilling and boundary-pushing as either J Dilla's DONUTS or Quasimoto's THE UNSEEN."
Oh No (born Michael Jackson), is the son of soul singer Otis Jackson and younger brother of noted hip-hop producer Madlib. Coming from such a musically adept family, it's no surprise he has emerged as a talented producer in his own right. Following in the tradition of sample-based productions by DJ Shadow, RJD2, not to mention his brother Madlib, DR. NO'S OXPERIMENT contains an assortment of beats sourced from rare psych rock from Greece, Lebanon, Italy, and Turkey. Containing 28 tracks all clocking in at less than two minutes each, the album functions more as a collection of instrumental vignettes rather than complete songs. Fragments of Arabic chants, lo-fi garage rock, ethnic percussion, and soundtrack orchestrations all compete for space in the intricate, patchwork mix. Tracks such as "Heavy" and "Breakout" seamlessly wrap funk riffs around clipped drum breaks and halting rhythms--creating a flowing beat-driven masterpiece that's part middle eastern prog exotica and part head-nodding instrumental hip-hop.
