Review

Entertainment Weekly (6/23/00, p.103) - "...Energetic old-school country. From Texas swing to gritty honky-tonk to sultry ballads....this compilation's consistency and range testify to the vision of a little label that could." - Rating: A-
Q (6/01, p.123) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The quality/weirdness levels are maintained thanks to sterling contributions from Giant Sand and cotton-pickin' Welshman Jon Langford..."
No Depression (7-8/00, p.106) - "...A historic document....these songs are ground with the everyday grit of falling down, struggling up and carrying on with whatever it takes, taking wry pleasure, straight, wherever you can."

Title Note

Bloodshot Records, the premier label of '90s/'00s "insurgent" country, where too-rootsy-for-Nashville C&W and back-to-basics alt rock come together has consistently championed the "roots" movement, lately branching out into issuing previously unreleased recordings by country music pioneers such as Hank Thompson, Pee Wee King, and Jimmie Davis. This two-CD compilation features everyone who's recorded for Bloodshot so far--and then some.

Most branches of contemporary roots music are present and correct. There's the punk-bluegrass of the Meat Purveyors, the melancholy balladry of Alejandro Escovedo (a captivating version of Mick Jagger's "Evening Gown," with guest vocals from the Mekons' Jon Langford); the country soul of Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, the Buck Owens-meets-garage rock of the Sadies and the Roughnecks, and the country-blues/old-timey neo-jug band Devil In A Woodpile. For good measure there's even a guest appearance from Graham Parker, backed by insurgent boozers the Waco Brothers, on "See Willy Fly By." There's enough fine, heartfelt and unique variety packed into DOWN TO THE PROMISED LAND to make it essential to anyone needing a key to the roots highway, and/or a memento of this fine record label's first five years as venders of listenable country music to the musically undernourished.
