Product note

2 LPs on 1 CD: DOWN & OUT BLUES (1959)/IN MEMORIUM (1965).
Personnel includes: Sonny Boy Williamson (vocals, harmonica); Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers (guitar); Otis Spann (piano); Willie Dixon (bass).
Personnel include: Sonny Boy Williamson (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Rogers , Luther Tucker, Robert Lockwood Jr. (guitar); Otis Spann (piano); Willie Dixon (double bass); Fred Below (drums).
Liner Note Authors: Studs Terkel; Tony Russell.
Though his name is never touted as much as Robert Johnson or Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson was one of the great bluesmen. In addition to leading a mythic life full of hobo wandering, boozing, and wild adventures, Williamson possessed blistering harmonica skills and sly, caustic vocals that epitomized the dark and dirty essence of the genre.
Blues fans won't find technical virtuosity here on the order of Johnson's playing or stylistic innovation in the manner of Howlin' Wolf, but Williamson lays it down hard and mean, with no nonsense in content or execution. Having the finest players in the game doesn't hurt either--on DOWN AND OUT, Williamson is joined by Otis Spann on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, Fred Below on drums, and guitarists Luther Tucker and Muddy Waters. This 2004 reissue also includes the 1965 album IN MEMORIUM, which focuses on Williamson's later material, but shows not the slightest drop in quality. The tracks here bear a striking resemblance to Williamson's THE REAL FOLK BLUES, so fans owning that compilation should beware. However, the added charge of groove-laden tunes like the double entendre-filled "Peach Tree" and the life meditation "Too Young to Die," on top of DOWN AND OUT's dynamite, is difficult to resist.
