Review

Rolling Stone (3/7/96, p.50) - 3 Stars - Good - "...think of Golden Smog as a sort of blender, its members tanked on a mutual love of country-rock twang and the rush of creating spontaneous music..."
Entertainment Weekly (1/19/96, p.52) - "...Golden Smog's comfort food cries out for a little spice, but it warms you up, nonetheless." - Rating: B
Q (3/96, p.94) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...a homespun, country-flecked collection of simply fine songs..."
NME (Magazine) (1/6/95, p.33) - 8 (out of 10) - "...bonded to form, not exactly a supergroup, but a kind of empathy meet to honour Gram Parsons' spirit....a laudably democratic collection which would honestly grace any of the assembly's day-job outfits....Good and jukebox friendly..."

Title Note

Producers: James Bunchberry Lane, Golden Smog.

Principally recorded at Pachyderm, Cannon Falls, Minnesota.

The members of Golden Smog are all from established bands, but because of contractual obligations, Rykodisc was not able to use their real names on the album. The band members are actually Dan Murphy of Soul Asylum, Marc Perlman and Gary Louris of The Jayhawks, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, Kraig Johnson of Run Westy Run and Noah Levy of The Honeydogs. Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and Jim Boquist of Son Volt make guest appearances on the album under the pseudonyms Anthony James and Andrew Conlee, respectively.

On Golden Smog's first full-length outing, the Midwest roots-rock supergroup goes beyond its cover band beginnings to create a charmingly relaxed album. Consisting of mostly original material by Gary Louris (Jayhawks), Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum) and Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run), MAINSTREAM is the sound of a bunch of guys having fun and penning some great songs to boot. This laid-back vibe is heightened by the band members' pseudonyms, which were created by substituting their first names with middle names and their last names with hometown street names.

"V" and "Won't Be Coming Home" alone are worth the price of admission, and would have fit seamlessly onto the Jayhawks' TOMORROW THE GREEN GRASS. Other highlights include "Glad & Sorry," "She Don't Have To See You" and "Radio King." Even the sugary "Pecan Pie" and goofy "Red Headed Stepchild" add to the enjoyably loose feel of this down-to-earth album.
