Even before Katrina, New Orleans wasn't all fun and games. Long-running sludge metal masters Eyehategod have excelled at portraying the grimy side of their home city since their formation in the late '80s. Combining the crushing, glacial-paced heaviness of the Melvins with hardcore's raw brutality as well as southern rock's nimble riffage, Eyehategod have created a unique place for themselves in metal. Their landmark 1996 album, DOPESICK, and its tumultuous 2000 follow-up, CONFEDERACY OF RUINED LIVES, laid out a blueprint many bands would follow in the coming years.
