Taking on the rollicking soul and R&B of saxophonist Junior Walker seems an unlikely project for a jazz experimentalist like clarinetist Don Byron, but Byron rarely does the expected. Whether talking on klezmer, funk, or the tunes of Thelonious Monk, Byron's eclecticism and taste for adventure are his guiding lights. Such is the case with DO THE BOOMERANG: THE MUSIC OF JUNIOR WALKER. The stellar band features electric guitar, Hammond B-3, and a lock-step rhythm section, in addition to guests that include bluesmen Chris Thomas King and Dean Bowman (who both contribute vocals). Unlike previous Byron projects, the music rarely ranges too far out, but that's not to say the session is traditional. Instead, funky grooves dominate with an emphasis on wild, modern arrangements that could only have come from the mind of Byron.
