Title Note

Full performer name: Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli.

Personnel: Django Reinhardt (guitar); Stephane Grappelli (violin); Andre Ekyan (alto saxophone, clarinet); Francois Vermeille (piano); Joseph Reinhardt, Eugene Vees (guitar); Fred Emerlin, Jean Bouchety (bass); Gaston Leonard (drums).

Recorded in Paris, France in November, 1947 and Geneva Switzerland on October 25, 1949. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.

This is a superb collection of guitar master Django's Quintette of the Hot Club of France recordings from 1947-49. His fusion of Gypsy/Rom music and jazz, as well as his relentlessly swinging guitar playing, influences jazz musicians to this day, as well as rock, folk and country players. (Listen to the music of David Grisman, a frequent collaborator with the Grateful Dead's late Jerry Garcia.) Grappelli's violin playing encompasses classical technique, light-hearted wit and the wail of the blues. Django's eloquent picking-style is still something to marvel at today. Think you know guitar? Like music with grace and style that swings like crazy? Dig in!
