A fantastic collection of tracks, DJANGO REINHARDT AND FRIENDS pairs the legendary guitarist with the likes of Coleman Hawkins, the Quintet of the Hot Club of France and long-time partner Stephane Grappelli. Standards like "Stardust," "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Blue Moon" (featuring a wonderful solo by Hawkins) are interspersed with Reinhardt originals like "Nuages" and "Echoes of Spain." Grappelli's violin soars, decorates and dives with the speed and precision of a stunt plane. Reinhardt's playing, which never ceases to be a revelation to the ear, creates fluid patterns of rhythmic and harmonic complexity from the opening track "You Rascal You" through the uptempo swing of "At Jimmy's Bar" to the bright spirals of "Sweet Sue, Just You."
The real pleasure of this disc is the inclusion of so many solo numbers and duets with Grappelli, which enable the listener to concentrate on Reinhardt's playing in a way that's not possible with the larger ensemble recordings. DJANGO REINHARDT AND FRIENDS, with almost 70 minutes of great songs and highly impressive performances, comes highly recommended.
