The French Riviera might seem like an odd place to get into Brazilian rhythms, but that's exactly what Dizzy Gillespie does on this 1962 album. Of course, Dizzy is also known for his extensive explorations into Afro-Cuban rhythms, and that particular preoccupation does pop up on "Long Long Summer," but it's bossa nova and samba grooves that stand out here. One moment, Gillespie is trading licks with sax man Charlie Ventura and flautist Leo Wright, respectively, on Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova classics "Chega de Saudade" and "Desafinado" (the latter given a samba lilt here), the next he's making a jazz-samba statement all his own with the self-composed "For the Gypsies." He might not have taken his bossa-jazz fusion to the pop charts like Stan Getz did, but he surely made his mark with this album nevertheless.
