Now here's something REALLY different; music commissioned by NATO/ARTS. (As if an art council representing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization wasn't weird enough.) The Distant Early Warning System is a series of radar stations along the northern borders of Alaska and Canada that kept vigil for a war that never came. The music on this disc is lovely and haunting, full of ghostly sounds that you might hear if Phillip Glass were covering Brian Eno. It's extremely evocative, making it nearly impossible not imagine those unmanned, yet functioning radar stations underneath the Arctic stars while listening to this disc.
