CMJ (7/31/00, p.33) - "...The forward-thinking musician's metal: complex, segmented, and technically precise..."

Title Note

Fates Warning: Ray Alder (vocals); Jim Matheos (guitar, keyboards, sequencing); Mark Zonder (drums).

Additional personnel: Steve Tushar (keyboards, sequencing); Kevin Moore (keyboards); Joey Vera (bass); Laurie Matheos, Amy Motta, Bernie Altman (spoken vocals).

Engineers include: Phil Magnotti, Terry Brown, Jim Matheos.

Recorded at Frankie's Hideaway, North Hollywood, California and Carriage House, Stamford, Connecticut between February 17 & April 16, 2000.

Prog metal veterans Fates Warning continue to evolve, picking up where A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY left off with their newest offering, DISCONNECTED. The disc is a conceptual piece presented in the spirit of APSOG, differing only in that there isn't a single weak moment here; which isn't to make light of the brilliant moments found on that previous album--DISCONNECTED simply drips with perfection.

Terry Brown's hand in the production is evident, and the album's contrasting movements have just the right balance of finesse and grit to translate well to a live setting. Bookended by instrumental pieces, the body of DISCONNECTED is a sonic rollercoaster of dynamics and extremes that never loses its center. Vocalist Ray Alder has seldom sounded so smooth and commanding while Neil Peart disciples will be salivating over Mark Zonder's awe-inspiring drumming. Bassist Joey Vera and keyboardist Kevin Moore both lend chops to the recording, while Fates Warning mastermind/guitarist Jim Matheos stands firmly at the helm of this prog metal masterpiece.
