Review

Magnet (pp.119-120) - "Like a time capsule exhibiting the freewheeling creativity of Prisonshake's late-'80s/early '90s heyday, DIRTY MOONS shines a light on a sound and sensibility...that, until now, we didn't even realize we'd been missing."

Title Note

Prisonshake: Robert Griffin (vocals, guitars); Douglas Enkler (vocals); Steve Scariano (bass instrument); Patrick Hawley (drums).

Personnel: Ann Hirschfeld (vocals, drums); Joe Thebeau (guitar, background vocals); Eve Abaray (violin); Jennifer Medeiros (cello).

Audio Mixers: Robert Griffin; Patrick Hawley; Rob Vester.

It took Prisonshake 15 years to complete the follow-up to its 1993 classic, THE ROARING THIRD, and while DIRTY MOONS bears all the hallmarks of a decade and a half spent working on an album--it's a sprawling high-concept two-disc set with a variety of sounds and styles--it remains very much a Prisonshake release.

Divided into four parts (or entry points as the band calls them), each comprising a chunk of songs, DIRTY MOOONS is rather cerebral in nature. Bits of melody, half-finished thoughts, and sonic pastiche share space with straight-ahead rockers. Songs such as "Fuck Your Self-Esteem," "Crush Me," and "The Cut Out Bin" (a brilliant requiem for the band's career) are as lean and mean as anything Prisonshake has ever done. Yet the less conventional songs, while occasionally jarring, also provide for some truly beautiful moments. DIRTY MOONS is a monumentally ambitious album for a band that never cared how far above the underground it managed to get.
