Brian Setzer Artist Snapshot:

Brian Setzer hit instant rock stardom as the frontman for the Stray Cats, the band that single-handedly jump-started the rockabilly revival of the early '80s. While the band's retro sound didn't last, Setzer proved himself a guitarist to be reckoned with. After he left the Stray Cats for good in the '90s, he assembled the Brian Setzer Orchestra, which helped kick-start another revival--big-band swing.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (8/9/98, p.75) - "...Instead of slavishly reviving big band music, Setzer puts a Louis Prima-style horn section behind a wailing electric guitar. Setzer's take on jump music reflects not only the kick of his rockabilly roots but the expansiveness of '60s amd '70s rock..."
- Rating: B+
Q (12/99, p.128) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...his 17-piece powerhouse finds him reviving suitable oldies or creating originals that simply sound as if they've jumped out of the past..."

THE DIRTY BOOGIE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album "Jump Jive An' Wail" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Sleepwalk" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

In his continuing evolution from pompadoured rockabilly revivalist to zoot-suited hipster, Brian Setzer keeps the faith with THE DIRTY BOOGIE, a collection that swings from stem to bow. Backed by hot horns and a bopping rhythm section, Setzer mixes well-arranged originals with well-known covers that show an aficionado's appreciation of jump blues, swing and doo-wop. Tunes by the Skyliners ("Since I Don't Have You"), Santo & Johnny ("Sleepwalk"), Bobby Darin ("As Long As I'm Singin'") and Bullmoose Jackson ("Nosey Joe") all enjoy the combination of Setzer's wide-ranging guitar playing and excellent charts played by his crack orchestra.

Elsewhere, Gwen Stefani is LaVerne Baker to Setzer's Jimmy Ricks in a playful reading of "You're The Boss." Clint Stacey's "This Old House" gives Setzer a chance to show off some fancy country finger-picking. The two numbers that will make you want to grab a flat foot floogie and cut a rug in your living room are a Neil Hefti-flavored re-arrangement of "Rock This Town" and a killer cover of Louis Prima's "Jump Jive An' Wail."
