Review

Living Blues (p.51) - "Dickinson's whispery, emery-board vocals are at once unselfconscious and masterfully crafted to inhabit the atmosphere his songs evoke."

Title Note

Personnel: Jim Dickinson (vocals, piano); Sam Shoup (bass instrument); Tom Lonardo (drums); Tate County Singers (background vocals).

Recording information: Zebra Ranch Studio, Coldwater, Mississippi.

Jim Dickinson may be best known as a producer and session pianist, having worked with everyone from the Rolling Stones to the Replacements, but he's got a batch of albums under his own name that display his gifts as an interpreter of blues, R&B, and more. Dickinson tackles a mix of blues and jazz standards here, bringing his raw, gritty, distinctly Southern style to everything from "When You Wish Upon a Star" to the blues evergreen "Early in the Morning." He works in a stripped-down piano-trio format, with only understated bass and drums accompanying his rolling piano licks and whiskey-soaked vocals on his romp through American musical history.
