Rolling Stone (11/89) - 4 Stars - Excellent - Ranked # 13 in Rolling Stone's "100 Best Albums Of The Eighties" survey.

Product note

Midnight Oil: Peter Garrett (vocals); Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Martin Rotsey (guitar); Peter Gifford (bass, background vocals); Rob Hirst (drums, background vocals).
Additional personnel: John Ockwell (cello); Jeremy Smith (French horn); Glad Reed (trombone); Warne Livesey (keyboards).
Recorded at Alberts Studios in Sydney, Australia.
The opening track, "Beds Are Burning," has an infectious middle eight that goes: "how can we dance when our earth is turning, how do we sleep while our beds are burning." This seemingly harmless song offers irony about the plight of minority races in Australia. It continues with the second track, "Put Down That Weapon." By the time the record is finished the listener has learnt something about a part of the world that would not normally get any exposure. This is a clever way of getting their message across. Were the songs not so good, this could be like going back to school.
