Like her three previous solo albums, Amy Ray's DIDN'T IT FEEL KINDER is quite different from the placid folk-rock of her higher profile work as half of the duo Indigo Girls, but it also shows a creative leap from her earlier solo work. A brash, electric album of pointedly political rockers, DIDN'T IT FEEL KINDER lacks the noisy, punky edge of Ray's earlier solo albums, instead featuring a more radio-friendly sound that makes songs like "Who Sold the Gun?" and "SLC Radio" feel downright subversive. The overall feel of the album is closer to Sheryl Crow or Melissa Etheridge than Team Dresch or Bikini Kill, which means Indigo Girls fans put off by Ray's aggressive earlier solo work will find this much more to their liking.
