The Delfonics Artist Snapshot:

Preceding the Gamble & Huff -led Philly Soul explosion by a few years, Philadelphia's Delfonics were one of the most popular soul vocal groups of the late 1960s and early '70s. Marked by gorgeous harmonies, a hazy funk groove, and William Hart's gentle lead vocals, the group's hits like "La La Means I Love You" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" provided the soundtrack to a distinct era in urban America.

Title Note

Though not a comprehensive collection, BMG's DIDN'T I BLOW YOUR MIND is a worthwhile Delfonics set. It skimps on the early hits by the legendary Phillysoul pioneers, yet makes up for any lack by focusing on the trio's later sides recorded in the 1970s. The group's sound was changing at the dawn of the new decade, growing deeper and more soulful, as hits like "I Told You So" and "Lying to Myself" show.

Those looking for all the Delfonics singles under one cover should look elsewhere--"La-La (Means I Love You)" is conspicuously absent--but that's not to say the material here isn't top notch. The group's elegant harmonies thrill, and the lush, uber-smooth sonic approach (courtesy of Phillysoul architect Thom Bell) pours over the listener like honey. These are the classic old-school soul gems that helped pave the way for the Quiet Storm of the later '70s and '80s, and the urban contemporary slow jams that followed.
