Sunny Day Real Estate began as part of Seattle's grunge explosion in the mid-1990s. Their debut on the iconic Sub Pop label found them mixing heavy rock with a distinct '70s influence. Though they didn't initially change the world … la Nirvana, they subsequently became the prime influence on the emo scene. After a split that found singer Jeremy Enigk releasing an acclaimed solo album, the band reconvened and released new material with a more mature, varied sound. Following their tour for their fourth album, THE RISING TIDE, SDRE called its quits again, only to reemerge as the Fire Theft in 2003.

From the crunching, frenetic yet undeniably melodic opening chords of "Seven," it is apparent that DIARY, the debut offering from Seattle's Sunny Day Real Estate, brings something unique to the table. Perhaps it is Jeremy Enigk's high-pitched and skyward-spiraling rasp, a variety of rasp heard neither before nor since, or the brilliantly oblique-without-being-pretentious lyrics. It could also be the profound pop-tinge that outshines the work of contemporaries such as Quicksand and Seaweed.

DIARY, which was produced by the ever-dependable Brad Wood, is made up of a series of perfectly positioned epic songs that flow into one another in a way that resembles a rock opera. From the roaring pop masterpiece "Seven" to the imploring "In Circles" to the whirling, wandering ballad "Song About an Angel," a compelling thread weaves through DIARY. Nowhere is the majesty more evident than on the somber "Grendel," a near-gothic symphony strong enough to move the most ardent hardcore kid to tears. The truest testimonial to the significance of DIARY has come from the host of bands (the Promise Ring, the Get Up Kids, Mineral, etc.) who have claimed Sunny Day as an influence.

Sunny Day Real Estate reluctantly wears the crown as kings of a little underground movement called "emo". No.. its not Blink, and its not Fallout Boy... its Sunny Day. If it werent for SDRE some of the worlds biggest underground (or above-ground) bands would likely be singing very different tunes. "Diary" has a perfect balance of hope & gloom, chaos & calm. The crashing guitars, perfectly constructed basslines, heavy-hitting drum lines and vocal placement that hits the mark every time are what make Sunny Day THE band in this genre. They have never been touched and likely wont ever be. The band has several albums, each one is a bit of a different approach to a similar theme, however "Diary" will always remain the quintessential album in their catalogue.
