I am a big fan of the "Spider-Man" series that Sam Raimi has produced so far.
However, this is not that great of an effort. I mean "Spiderman 3" is an ok
film, but it is lacking the "je ne sais qui" of the two earlier films in the
series. Actually I do know what it is missing.
The first movies, you felt
that the films hero, Peter Parker, was a complex character. Even though this
film delves into Peters multiple roles in life (Spiderman, boyfriend to Mary
Jane, a student, a photographer, and etc.), the film seems to only skim the
surface of his many different masks that Peter wears in his day to day life.
Also the tongue in cheek humor that is the one of things that translated well
from the comic book to the silver screen in the first two films, falls flat in
this one.
I guess the main flaw that this film has is that it is stretched
too far, and feels as if Raimi is trying too hard to wrap up the whole series in
this film.
Despite its faults the film still depicts the antagonists as just
as complex as your friendly neighborhood Spider-man. Which is a nice change of
pace. It does this by giving them a back story that makes the villains a lot
more sympathetic to the viewer.
The action in the movie does provide some
good excitement, and the CG has improved from the first Spider-man.
All in
all if you are looking to have film to eat some popcorn, and blow a couple of
hours in front of the TV, without having to think that much, Spider-Man 3 is not
a bad choice
