By any measure "Nashville Skyline" must be considered one of Bob Dylans minor
albums. His songwriting here is good but not anywhere near great, and the entire
album doesnt even clock in at a half-hour. Yet theres still a bit to be
discovered here he seems to be involved with the records overtly country
leanings and is quite obviously enjoying himself, delivering some of his more,
shall we say, "normal" vocal performances. One More Night, I Threw It All Away
and the classic Lay Lady Lay are easily the best tracks on offer here, although
not a one can be considered among his best. All things considered, Dylan didnt
pioneer anything at all with this album. Rick Nelson, the Monkees and the Byrds
(among others) had already laid down even more significant inroads in the
country-rock landscape, and at the same time as this album the Flying Burrito
Brothers were beginning their 30-year career of defining and redefining the
genre. But Dylan sure didnt hurt anything, either.
